Other 2012 theories
Is There Any Actual Evidence For A 2012 Doomsday/Cataclysm?
A quick search on Google will show you how many sites there are devoted to the 2012 question. Another on Amazon will show you how many books have 2012 as their theme.
And of course there’s the 2012 movie, the 2012 TV series and The Joshua Files children’s book series…
See how popular the 2012 question is becoming on Google…
The truth is that there are plenty of theories. But no hard evidence.

Theories about 21 December 2012
I’m not going to refute each theory because I don’t have the necessary knowledge or expertise. Who knows what will happen? With so many different theories you have to ask - they can’t all be right. Can they?
Here are some of the theories, so you can read and decide for yourself. These are NOT scientific articles; they are not peer-reviewed - they have been put up by people who believe in these ideas. But your decision will just be an opinion. Because ultimately this is an experiment that will have to wait until 21 Dec 2012…
- The aliens are coming!
Lots of fun, unless you actually worry about bizarre things like that. For more on this, watch the 2012 movie.
- The Galactic Superwave
This is the idea used in The Joshua Files - a massive explosion in the centre of the galaxy which would send out a ’superwave’ of energy that might hit the Earth as an electromagnetic pulse. Such an ‘EMP’ might well erase data stored on computer hard drives.
So far as we know there’s never been such an event. However, since the only way effect would be on computers and electronic equipment, you might argue that last time it happened…nobody noticed.
- The Earth’s magnetic poles will shift
As dramatic as that can sound, it seems that the polar shift takes 5000 years to complete. It’s a gradual thing. So the chances of waking up one day and finding that north has become south… doesn’t seem very likely.
- The galactic alignment will cause human beings to experience a shift in consciousness
John Major Jenkins, one of the world’s leading 2012 experts has written extensively about this. It’s an interesting idea and ties in nicely with Mayan and New Age ideas of rebirth and renewal. But what does it actually mean in practical terms? If you find out, let us know.
- A supervolcano will explode and begin a nuclear winter - catastrophic, sudden climate change
Unfortunately it’s very likely that at some point in the next few hundred or thousand years something like this will happen. Calderas - gigantic caverns filled with molten lava - exist on the planet. Occasionally, every few thousand years, they explode, to catastrophic effect. But even modern geophysical technology can’t predict exactly when such an event will happen. So how could the Mayans have predicted a supervolcano?
- Planet X/Niburu
This is the most fun theory. Planet X aka Niburu is the mysterious ‘10th’ planet that some people believe exists beyond Pluto, which used to be the 9th planet of our solar system, but now is thought of as just a big rock.
Some people believe that the Mayan and also the ancient Sumerians knew about Niburu and knew that it will one day crash into Earth.
Before you get too worried, you’ll have to persuade yourself that ancient people could know about a planet that modern advanced telescopes can’t see. That a planet could appear from nowhere to collide with Earth or the Moon. And that an ancient civilisation knew when this might happen. In a world with time-travel - maybe. But that sounds a lot like make-believe.
Finally, here are a couple of articles about 2012 that you might find interesting.

2012 debunkery - it’s just a story!
Well, every reputable scientific agency is producing information on why the 2012 ‘threat’ is not real. So much choice of 2012 debunkery!
I’ve picked National Geographic’s recent article about 2012, which similarly to our mayan2012kids own page about 2012 theories (only much more emphatically), it goes through the various - ahem - theories. Nat Geo admirably [...]

FAMSI - What the Ancient Maya Tell Us About 2012
That terrific resource for all things ancient and MesoAmerican, the Website of the Federation f0r the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc, has published an excellent paper by MarK Van Stone about What the Ancient Maya Tell Us About 2012. And it’s not the end of the world…
Here’s a quote:
First, let me affirm that the year 2012 [...]
